A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DIVINE WILL FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SPINOZA AND MULLĀ ṢADRĀ

Document Type : Original Article

Abstract

One of the Islamic philosophers who tried to explain divine will based on his principles is Mullā Ṣadrā. Relying on principles such as the primacy of existence and the creation of existence, he proves the inherent will of God. In the Western thought, the rationalist Spinoza, with his special expression towards God and the different worldview explanation he presents, considers the will understood by man as partial and the absolute will as a subjective matter and negates God. This article is trying to explain the differences, common points, motivations and challenges of two thinkers and their success rate with a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach. Spinoza has reached wrong conclusions such as the essence of God and the association of will with determinism because of the wrong assumptions and incorrect concepts such as the definitions that he provides for God, attribute and free will, but in Mullā Ṣadrā’s account, while explaining the description of will, its interdependence with determinacy (maujabiyāt) is also ruled out.
